Cooperative Learning Roles

Leader Card

  • Makes sure that everyone gets a turn to speak.
  • Keeps the group focused on the task
  • Possible things to say:
    • “Let’s hear from _______ next”
    • “That sounds fun, but let’s get back to our job for now.”

Recorder Card

  • Lists group members’ ideas on paper.
  • Paraphrases what is said for clarification.
  • Writes on the board for the whole class to see during the presentation
  • Possible things to say:
    • “I think you said, __________; am I right?”
    • “How should I write that?”

Time Keeper Card

  • Encourages the group to stay on task.
  • Announces when time is halfway up and again when it is time to wrap up.
  • When there are several tasks, divides the time and helps transition with time warnings.
  • Possible things to say:
    • “We are at the halfway mark.”
    • “We only have 3 minutes left. Let’s make sure we wrap it up.”

Reporter Card

  • Recaps the group’s work to make sure everyone knows what will be presented to the class
  • Presents the group’s ideas to the whole class
  • Possible things to say:
    • “This is what we said _________”
    • “ Is this what we should share with the class?”

Resource Monitor Card

  • Gets the supplies needed for the task.
  • Asks the teacher for help when the group has a question.
  • Possible things to say:
    • “I will get the supplies we need.”
    • “Do you think we need to ask Mr/ Ms _______’s help?”
